Clayton Guy Leathers was born 8 Jun 1885 in Hermon, Penobscot County, Maine to Millard Leathers and Aline Overlock1,2.

Clayton appeared on the 1900 US Federal Census in Hermon, thirteen years old, living with this parents and sister Mildred (four)3.

At age nineteen, Clayton Guy Leathers married Annie Pushor of Pittsfield, Somerset County, Maine on 1 Jan 1904 in Levant, Penobscot County, Maine4,5. Annie, seventeen years old, was the daughter of Charles Pushor and Josephine Getchell. The marriage record indicates that Clayton worked in a woolen mill, as did both of Annie’s parents. Annie died in 1908. Although I cannot find a civil record of her death, several cemetery records exist that confirm her identity and year of death6,7.

Furthermore, on the 1910 US Census, Clayton G. Leathers is again living with his parents in Hermon, farmer, widowed, and there is a three year old granddaughter in the household by the name of Marion M. Leathers8. Clayton’s sister Mildred was only 15 at this time, so she was too young to be Marion’s mother. Marion is also living with Millard and Aline in 19209.

Marion could have been Clayton and Annie’s child, as the time frame fits. But she also could be the child of a sibling of Clayton’s that was not in the household in 1900. I cannot find civil records for more children of Millard and Aline, and there are no 1890 Census records available for Maine.

Clayton G. Leathers married Bertha D. Fogg on 10 Jul 1910 in Bangor by Rev. Arthur H. Black. The marriage certificate says that Clayton was widowed, that this was his second marriage, and that he worked as a teamster10. They had one child:

  1. Randall C. Leathers, born about 1913

Clayton’s occupations in the 1900s through the 1920s (taken from Bangor city directories) include:

  • Teamster – 1910, 1921
  • Laborer on the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad – 1912, 1914
  • “Express Wagon” – 1919
  • Clerk – 1923

Clayton Leathers appears on the 1920 US Census on Ohio Street in Bangor, living with Bertha and son Randall11. He next appears on the 1930 US Census in West Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut with Bertha and Randall12. He gave his occupation as “machinist” in a “typewriter factory”. I have not been able to locate Clayton or Bertha on the 1940 US Census, but Clayton G. Leathers (and wife Bertha D) is found in a 1941 directory of the city of Bangor, living on RFD #4 off of Ohio Street13. He also appears in Bangor city directories from 1931 to 1937, so the Leathers’ stay in Connecticut must have been a short one. His occupations in the 1930s (taken from Bangor city directories) include:

  • Truck driver – 1933 and 1934
  • Laborer – 1937

Clayton Guy Leathers died 6 Sep 1967 in Scarborough, Cumberland County, Maine14,15.
