Etta Allene Chase Selzer about 1977 thumbnail

Etta Allene Chase Selzer, about 1977

Etta Allene Chase was born 4 Jul 1897 in Bangor, Penobscot County, Maine, daughter of John Colby Chase and Cora A. Gilman.1,2 She appeared on the 1900, 1910, and 1920 US Federal Censuses in Bangor, living in her parents’ home on RFD 4 off of Ohio Street. In 1920 Allene was twenty two years old and gave her occupation as “teacher”.3,4,5

On the 1930 US Census, Allene is again in Bangor, living in the family home with her brother Roland M. Chase being head of household, her father having died in April of 1920. She was thirty two years old and gave her occupation as “stenographer” for an “automobile co.”.6

Allene Chase married William F. Selzer on 12 Sep 1936 in Bangor.7 I have found no record of them having children, and her obituary does not mention any (or a late or living husband, for that matter).

I have not been able to locate Allene or William Selzer on the 1940 US Census, but numerous Bangor city directories list both of them with their addresses. The 1937 Bangor city directory has Allene C. Selzer and husband William F. Selzer rooming with Mrs. Cora A. Chase. Allene was a stenographer for the YMCA and William was a mechanic for Bangor Hydro Electric Company.8 In the 1939, 1940, and 1941 directories, Allene and William are both listed as rooming with Roland M. Chase on RFD 4 off Ohio Street, this time Allene being a bookkeeper for the YMCA and William still employed by BHECo.9,10,11 If they were indeed living with Roland Chase, they must not have been counted on the 1940 Census.

In the 1942, 1944 and 1945 city directories, Allene and William were living at 31 Kossuth Street, Allene still a bookkeeper at the YMCA. William’s occupation listed as “dir NYA” in 1942 and “USA” in 1944 and 1945.12,13,14 In the 1949, 1950, 1951, and 1952 directories, however, Allene is still at 31 Kossuth, but William is not listed.15,16,17,18 In 1954, Allene is still living at 31 Kossuth, and so is her brother Clarence G. Chase. I also found Allene in the 1964 and 1965 Bangor telephone directories.19,20

The only William F. Selzer in the Social Security Death Index and the Maine Death Index was born in 1907 and died in 1974 in Skowhegan, Somerset County, Maine.21,22 His Findagrave memorial is consistent with those dates, indicates that he was a private in the US Army during WWII, and had a spouse Elizabeth Selzer.23 If this is indeed the same William F. Selzer, the “USA” in the 1944 and 1945 city directories makes sense. There is a marriage in the index to the Maine Vital Records of a William F. Selzer to Elizabeth Smith on 12 Jul 1950 in South Brewer.24 The marriage date coincides with the time period where William stops appearing with Allene in the directories.

Considering William may have had another spouse and is not listed in the directories with Allene after 1949, they may have been divorced and William moved out of Bangor. A divorce also may explain why he was not mentioned in Allene’s obituary, rather than saying she was a widow. Without further documentation the disappearance of William Selzer from records pertaining to Allene will remain a mystery.

Etta Allene Chase Selzer died 25 Oct 1980 in Bangor.25,26,27,28 Her obituary from the Bangor Daily News is transcribed below.
