Henry C. Call may or may not be buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery. I have been able to find no birth, marriage, or death records for him, and there is no date of death on his gravestone, but much can be discovered about his life from his appearances on census records and in city directories.

Henry C. Call was born 21 Dec 1849 to Ephraim Call and Caroline F. Lowry1.

Henry appeared on the 1850 US Federal Census in Bangor, Penobscot County, Maine, being two months old at that time2. On the 1860 US Census, he was ten years old and living with his family in Hermon, Penobscot County, Maine3, and in 1870 he was 20 years old and living in the same place4.

The 1875 and 1877 Bangor city directories list Henry C. Call as living with his father on Ohio Street, working as a “traveling agent” with “The Northern Border”5,6, a newspaper based in Bangor. The 1879 Bangor directory also has Henry living with his father on Ohio Street, at that time working as a photographer7.

On the 1880 US Federal Census, Henry was thirty years old and living with his mother and younger sister Caroline in Bangor on Ohio Street. He and his sister both gave their occupation as “photographer”8. Henry’s brother George W. Call also worked as a photographer at times.

I have located several articles which describe a Henry C. Call as being on several different committees in the Bangor city government, but there was also a prominent physician in Bangor with the same name, and there is nothing in these articles that can distinguish between the two Henrys.

No death date can be found for Henry, and while his name appears on the family headstone, there is no foot marker on the family plot as there is for the other people buried here, so it cannot be positively determined whether Henry C. Call is even buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery. As he was born in 1849, though, it’s certain that he is deceased.
