John Colby Chase was born in Bangor, Penobscot County, Maine about 29 Dec 1856, son of Alex H. Chase and Lavinia Baston.1,2

John appeared on the 1860 and 1870 US Federal Censuses in Bangor, age 3 and 13 respectively, living with his parents.3,4 He married Cora A. Gilman, daughter of Henry Gilman and Mary Twombly, on 9 May 1878 in Bangor.5,6 John and Cora had at least seven children:

  • Amy L. Chase, born about 1879.
  • Clarence G. Chase, born 13 Jul 1880.7
  • Fred L. Chase, born 18 Feb 1885.8
  • Maurice, born 2 Aug 1889.9
  • Roland M. Chase, born about 1891.
  • Etta Allene Chase, born 4 Jul 1897.10
  • Hazel M. Chase, born 13 Jun 1899.11

John Colby Chase next appears on the 1880 US Census in Bangor, living in the household of his father, with Cora and one year old daughter Amy.12 He also appeared in the 1888 and 1891 Bangor city directories, living first on Old Levant Road, then on Ohio Street, beyond Davis Road, occupation “farmer”.13,14

Deed was witnessed and signed by John C. Chase, wife Cora, Cora’s brother Jeremiah Gilman, and Jeremiah’s wife.

In 1900, John C. Chase appears on the US Census in Bangor on Ohio Street, listed as head of the household. With him are Cora, all his children (listed above), and his sister Susie J. Chase. His occupation was “farmer”.15 On the 1910 and 1920 US Censuses, John and Cora are still on Ohio Street in Bangor, with varying numbers of children still at home, and sister Suzie still with them both census years.16,17

John Colby Chase died in Bangor on 14 Apr 1920 of apoplexy and acute arterio sclerosis.18,19
