Pearl Spragg was born 24 Feb 1906.1,2 She appeared on the 1930 US Federal Census in Newton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. She was twenty four years old and living in the household of Ralph W Mckenzie, working as a private family servant. The census sheet also indicates that she was born in English Canada and immigrated in 1907 (when she was one year old). Her father was born in English Canada and her mother born in Scotland.3

Pearl Spragg married Roland M. Chase on 12 Aug 1939 in Bangor, Penobscot County, Maine. The index to the State of Maine vital record lists her residence as Bangor.4

Pearl next appears on the 1940 US Census in Bangor, living with her husband Roland Chase. Again, her birthplace was recorded as English Canada, and that she was a naturalized citizen. I have not been able to locate any naturalization records for Pearl. The census indicates that she lived in the “same place” in Penobscot County in 1935, but not the “same house” as many other people enumerated on this sheet. This suggests that she lived in Bangor in 1935 and that she was not yet married to or living with Roland Chase. Her highest year of education was grade 6.5

Roland Chase died in 1962. I found Pearl S. Chase in the 1964 and 1965 Bangor city directories, living on Ohio Street in Bangor near where Davis Road crosses.6,7 I could not find references to her in later Bangor directories.

The U.S. Social Security Death Index has Pearl Spragg Chase’s death date as December 1977 in the town of Orrington, Penobscot County, Maine, while the index to the State of Maine vital records lists her death date as 27 Dec 1977 in Bangor.8,9 Pearl’s gravestone is inscribed with a death date of 1 Dec 1977.10 No further evidence could be found to confirm her actual date of death.
